Not just for keeping your rug in place! The cushion is an important aspect of prolonging the life of your rug. The pad helps cushion the rug from the existing floor underneath to absorb the weight of traffic and to help keep the rug from breaking down. Choose the correct pad to keep the rug from slipping. Determine whether the rug will be on top of carpet or on a hard surface floor. We offer a selection of pads of each type.  Also when purchasing a pad you want to make sure it won’t destroy your wood floor.  At carpetart we sell only padding for area rugs that has a 25 year warranty against adhering to your wood floors.

PROPER CLEANING

To keep your rug in great shape, vacuum or shake it regularly. You need to get any loose dirt from the surface of the rug. Dirt and soil can work down into the base of the rug and break down the fibers. Follow the manufacturer’s directions on cleaning. A common baby wipe will take care of 90% of all stains not only on your carpet but on your fabrics but when using over the counter products, all traces must be removed from the carpet after cleaning. Otherwise, they will act like a magnet and soil will attach to any trace left in the rug. We recommend professional cleaning for all rugs. We do not recommend protective coatings for natural fibers. They could affect the color and destroy the fiber’s natural ability to breathe. However, protective coatings can be applied to synthetics.

Selecting a Size

How do you determine the correct size rug for your space? It is not an exact science. The type of room and furniture placement should factor into your decision. We suggest leaving an equal amount of flooring exposed on all sides of the room. The first step is always to measure the space using a tape measure. One of the most common mistakes is to rely on a visual or ‘eyeball’ the space. A 6×9 rug can look very differently hanging on a rack.

Dining & Breakfast rooms

• When selecting a room size rug for the dining room, you need to measure the length and width of your table. Don’t forget to include the table leaf if you use it frequently.
• We recommend leaving enough space so the back legs of the dining room chairs can be placed on the rug. This will avoid chair legs getting caught on the edge of the rug when guests are pushing their chairs in and out.

Living or Family room

• We recommend selecting a size that allows each piece of furniture to be completely on or off the rug. The exception to this rule is a sofa, it is common for the back legs of a sofa to hang off the rug.
• Make sure to account for any heating vents or doorways.
• Depending on the usage of the room, you may want to consider traffic patterns.
• If there’s a hearth in the room, consider purchasing another small rug for placement in front of the fireplace.
• Coordinate the size of the rug with the size of your coffee table.
• An 8×11 rug brings together most furniture groupings nicely.

Bedroom

• When measuring for a bedroom, you must first determine if you prefer one room size rug or several rugs around the bed.
• When considering one room size rug it should be large enough for you to take a step or two when getting out of bed.
• If you have one bed centered in the room, you can place a rug at the foot of the bed and one on each side. If you have two beds in the room, you can add one more rug in between them.
• This is the perfect place to play around with rug sizes- Try a round rug or a rectangular rug placed at a diagonal underneath the bed.

Entry Way

• Consider a material that can handle the high traffic areas.
• Make sure the door can open and close over the rug. Consider the thickness or pile height of the room.
• If it’s a long hallway, you can also consider using two 5 ft runners or we can make a custom runner to the perfect length and width

• Add 2-4 inches on each side of the window for overlap (if you have molding on your window then add 2-4” beyond the window molding on each side). Go farther if you would like the drapes to stack off the window.
• Take that number and order 2 panels to get proper fullness.
  Example:
  • I have a window that is 46 inches and a 2 inch molding around it.
  • I add 2 inches on each side from the outside of molding, this gives me 54 inches total.
  • I would order 2 panels that are 54 inches each.

How to Measure for Pole/Rod Pocket Panels Height?

• Measure from the top of the pole and add the pole size to allow “take-up” for finished length.
• If you would like to have a puddle look add 2-8 inches.
  Example:
  • I have a length of 82 from the top of my pole to the bottom of the floor.
  • I am using a 2” pole to hang my drapes on, so I add 2 inches for the “take up” by my pole.
  • My finished length would be 84 inches.

How to Measure Pleated Panels Width? (French, Inverted, Goblet, Pleated Tab-Top)

• Measure the width of your window or area you would like to cover
• Add 2-4 inches on each side of the window for overlap(if you have molding on your window then add 2-4” beyond the window molding on each side).
  Example:
  • I have a window that is 46 inches
  • I add 2 inches on each side which gives me 50 inches total
  • I need to order 2 Pleated panels 25 inches each to get the correct fullness.

How to Measure Height?

• Measure from the bottom of the pole, ring or fixed drapery hook to the floor.
• You can add 2-8 inches for a puddle look.
